    Too Bad, So Sad

Why is it that it is customary good practice for an employee to give a two week notice to their current job when they quit, but it is general common practice in companies to give no notice when demoting or laying someone off? This seems like a rather messed up double standard.
Unless unemployment is less than 1% most companies would have no problem re-filling a vacant position, so for an employee to come in one day and say they quit and walk back out it shouldn't be any big deal. But for a company to one day out of the blue tell an employee that they are fired, demoted, down sized etc and that they either take a different postion (if that is even an option) or not come back is an act that carries considerably more impact.

So I made good additional progress on my project, however, I am going to have to re-think a major part of it in order to make the program able to re-schedule breaks and lunches. It shouldn't be a huge deal but it is an unfortuante minor setback.
The snow so far in Mansfield OH has not dissappointed. Yesterday we got a second good snow of the winter, giving a very good covering on the ground of a foot or so. However, they must have hired snow-aphobes to plow the roads b/c most of the roads don't seem to get plowed to any degree until the day after it stops snowing. This is especially bad in the more rural towns. For example, yesterday we had nearly 50% of scheduled exployees call off because they couldn't get to work; or so they claimed. You would think that after 200 years of being where it is Mansfield and the surrounding cities would have learned how to deal with 4-6 inches of snow in real time.

Hey Pete - I am not a lawyer by any stretch, but I think I know something of what you're talking about. Most companies I've encountered have something called "at-will" employment. Usually they say something about it in the fine print on the application. It means there is no contract, written or implied, between the employer and employee, and either side can legally end employment without notice.

Most companies want notice because it leaves them in a bind to lose employees. A new employee must be found and trained, and this costs money and productivity. There's no reason they can stop you from quitting and walking out, because of the at-will employment agreed on at hiring. But they do hold a little leverage, in saying they will not rehire people that quit and walk out, and they will pull this out when employees just threaten to quit.

I think I had to put two weeks notice in the last time I quit a job, which was there at the call center. Well, I briefly quit working for the state, but the state does not use at-will employment, and didn't consider me to have quit during the four days I didn't show up. Oh well, I guess it let me come back.

I didn't know you had a blog. It seems like the last time I saw you and asked about it, you didn't seem interested in starting one. Nice to see what you are up to.
